Megaprocessor was Created by a Crazy Engineer for Four Years to Play Tetris

Insane architect put in four years and made a "megaprocessor" to play Tetris

An electrical engineer from the UK named James Newman spent four years and over US$53,000 on making a 10-meter (or 33-foot) wide "megaprocessor" that can play our youth most loved great, Tetris.

Even though the size of the device is enormous, it just performs like a standard, chip-sized microprocessor ( not even a very good one at that).

“The machine on your desk may be a million times better than what I have built – but mine is much prettier,” Newman told Zoe Kleinman from the BBC. He also said, “Mine has 10,000 times more LEDs.”

James started working on the huge processor back in 2012 to visualize how the microprocessors work. He want to create an educational tool so that people can understand more about the inner-workings of the technology they use in every day life.

“Computers are quite opaque, looking at them it is impossible to see how they work. What I like to do is get inside and see what’s going on,” Newman says on his site. “Trouble is we can not shrink down small enough to walk inside a silicon chip.”

He continued saying, “But we can go the other way. We can build the thing big enough so that we can walk inside it. Not only that we can also put LEDs on everything so we can actually SEE the data moving and the logic happening. It is going to be great,”

At present, after finishing the machine, it weighs in roughly 500 kilograms and measures 10 metres wide and 2 metres tall, and contains over 10,000 LEDs and 40,000 transistors.

So far, Newman only used this megaprocessor to run the famous video game Tetris. It might be able to play other old-school games too.

Newman’s next step is to figure out what he is going to do with the device. At present, he says that he might open his house up to the public for them to get a chance to see it, but nothing has been verified yet.

“My dream is that it goes to a museum or educational institute so that people can learn from it,” he told the BBC. “I doubt I’ll be able to sell it.”

This guy is sure crazy, in a good way.
